PROBLEM: showing respect

In the Buddhist religion, when a grandparent pasts away, the grandsons are encouraged to become monks for the duration of the funeral. Becoming a monk requires a ritualistic ceremony, complete shaving of the head, eye brows, and all other facial hair, and residence in a Buddhist temple. In the temple, monks are only allowed to snack until noon, when they receive their only meal of the day. After that, they are only allowed to consume liquids. Monks are also required to wear nothing but an orange robe draped just around the shoulders and the hips. No underwear. All thoughts of alcohol, partying, drugs, sex, anything pleasurable, are absolutely prohibited. One is required to want nothing and need nothing. One is supposed to be at peace with whatever they have. Doing this is the sign of utmost respect towards your passed one.

However, I’m on the fence. My brother is doing it. All of my other guy cousins are doing it. But they’re doing it on friday. I won’t be there til saturday afternoon. I really love my hair. AND my eyebrows for that matter. I’m going to TAO about a week after that too. I know… People are going to give me shit for not doing it. My mom however, the most important figure in my life, told me that it’s really up to me. She said it isn’t her choice or anybody else’s. But rather, it’s my own. It will be good for me, but it’s really up to me. I really don’t know if I want to do it. Become a monk? If it was any other time of the year, I would. However, right now is the absolute wrong time. I am sad. I feel bad for not doing it. I really do. But I don’t think I will. I am sorry Grandpa. I still really love you, and I hope you understand.
